There May Be Experts in Your Community That You Don’t Know About

In high school my mother was a very good archer. She was All-State. Yep, archery was a high school sport at one time. It still is in certain parts of the country, but not many. Usually a kid has to go to resident away camp to try out archery. Even though it is an Olympic event, there are few places where one can learn the art. One of the problems is that there aren’t too many instructors around.

The other day I was reading a story about how a junior archery program had just started in South Carolina because of the talents and passion of an archery coach. It got me thinking that there may be people in my community that have expertise in something that would make a great youth program.

If your program line-up needs something new, think about putting out a call-for-instructors. Try a press release asking if anybody has expertise in a certain area that may make a good youth program. Who knows what kind of classes or camps you may be offering in the near future.

Well said. Our club is a growing club of youth from between 8 and 18 year olds. If people are interested in starting a club, contact your local County Extension agent or 4-H office. They’ll sponsor your club, provide equipment and training for coaches. Archery is a great sport, not just for boys, not just for girls, but for the whole family.
