One of the rooms/effects that we’ll have in our haunt is called Scarecrow Row. The original idea started out with three scarecrows. We weren’t sure if we were going to have the scarecrows just stare at the people going through the haunt (that whole suspense, not-sure-if-they-are-going-to-jump-out thing can be really freaky) or if we were going to have the actors actually jump towards them.
After some deliberation we decided to have multiple scarecrows. Some of them would be just dummies, while a few of them will be actors (When I say actors I mean volunteers. They aren’t getting paid).
Getting costumes is just a matter of going to the thrift shop and buying checkered shirts, jeans and overalls. Then we’ll put burlap sacks with eye holes over theire heads. The hands are covered with gardening gloves. Costumes…easy. The rest of the decor…not so much.
After deciding on getting a wooded forest scene setter (this was the easier than painting a background, and better than leaving the wall black), some crows, a sound effects CD, a strobe light, a black light or two, and some corn stalks (found at a not so local farm), it was time to find some straw bales. I contacted the nearest feed and pet supply store and asked where I would be able to find straw bales. The first place I called said they rented straw bales for $2 each. Score.
Scarecrow Row…complete.
