Help! I’m in a Funk – 5 Ways I Deal With It

We all get into a funk at times. For me it usually happens when I come off of a vacation or long weekend. I just can’t seem to get back into my routine or rhythm right away. If I oversleep on my first day back to work, then I’m in a funk for sure. Well, that’s where I’m at right now and it stinks!

So what do you do when you just can’t seem to get things going, when you kind of feel depressed but you don’t why? Fortunately, for me this doesn’t happen to often, but when it does, there are 5 things I do to get me back on track and out of the funk.

  1. Going to the Movies
Going to see a comedy is great, but for me, an action/adventure flick will work just as well. Getting out of the house and getting lost in a movie for a couple of hours is great, and it’s one of my favorite things to do.
  2. Going for a Bike Ride or Walk
Physically moving works wonders when I’m not feeling right. It clears my head and gets the endorphins going. This is a must for me when I’m in a funk.
  3. Cleaning and Organizing My Work Area and Home
Clutter kills, my mood that is. When I was a kid I loved having my room a mess. Things have changed. Now I like things in their place. When my mood isn’t where it should be usually my work and living spaces reflect that. So cleaning up and throwing useless things away (or at least filing them away) helps a lot.
  4. Changing my Bed Sheets
A friend told me about this tactical gem and it’s awesome. There’s something about freshly cleaned sheets and pillow cases that feels…oh so good. I’ve even been known to go buy new sheets during these off-days.
  5. Listening to My Favorites Songs
On my iPod I have a set of songs that make me feel good. These are the songs that put a smile on my face or make me want to move. I’ll listen to these 10-20 songs over and over. Here are the songs that are currently in my “Feel Good” playlist:
  • Beautiful by Taylor Dayne
  • Amber by 311
  • Biggest Part of Me by Ambrosia
  • The Devil Went Down to Georgia by The Charlie Daniels Band
  • Disturbia by Rihanna
  • Easy by Bare Naked Ladies
  • Stronger by Kanye West
  • Golden Years by David Bowie
  • The General by Dispatch
  • Out Here Grindin’ by DJ Khaled
  • Funk No. 49 by James Gang
  • I Kissed a Girl by Katie Perry
  • Just Dance by Lady GaGa
  • Free by Marcus Miller and Corinne Bailey Rae
  • 257 Weeks by Nine Days
  • You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid by the Offspring
  • When I Grow Up by The Pussycat Dolls
  • Umbrella by Rihanna
  • I Still Believe by Tim Capello
  • Wish Liszt by Trans Siberian Orchestra

There are a couple of other things you can do the help deal with being in a funk. Those would be to take a personal “mental health” day off and/or to go pamper yourself (massage, spa treatment, shopping, etc.).

Ah, now I feel better.
