As we get closer to our Halloween Haunt event UPS and FedEx are dropping off boxes with props and decorations daily. One of the issues we’ve been going back and forth about is how we would create the walls. We finally decided that PVC pipes and plastic sheeting would be our best since we needed to be able to construct the haunt in one day (PVC pipes and connectors are easier to put together than 2×4s and plywood. Also, we wouldn’t have to paint a bunch of wood and spray it with flame retardant.
Unfortunately, our local fire department made it clear that we could not use plastic sheeting. That was a problem. Our whole wall building plan depended on the sheeting. After searching the internet I came across Poly Vinyl that is sold by Shindigz, which has passed flame-retardant test UL94. According to the fire department that was acceptable. Whew! That was a close one.
After using graph paper to draw out where the walls would go, I was able to determine how much PVC pipe we needed. I then went to Home Depot and picked up the inch and a half black PVC pipes along with the connectors needed. Unfortunately, Home Depot didn’t have 4 and 5 way connectors which was important to have. So I ordered the connectors I needed from Creative Shelters. Their delivery was quick and prices reasonable.
One last thing. The fire marshall said that patrons had to be able to see the exit signs from anywhere in the building. Because of that we’ll have to cut the walls down from 8′ to 7′ and we won’t be able to place a roof over the maze. Bummer. Once we build it all, I’ll post some pictures.
